A large study of over 400,000 people living in ten western European countries found only a modest link between high intake of fruit and vegetables and reduction in overall cancer risk: thus failing to confirm the widely held belief enshrined in the World Health Organization’s recommendation that people should eat five servings of fruit and vegetables a day to prevent cancer and other diseases.

Dr Paolo Boffetta, of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, and colleagues, wrote about their findings in a study published in the 6 April online issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

In 1990 the World Health Organization recommended people eat five helpings of fruit and vegetables a day to reduce their risk of cancer, cardiovascular and other diseases. But since then, many studies have either produced inconsistent results or failed to find a significant link between fruit and vegetable intake and cancer risk, wrote the authors.

For their prospective study, Boffetta and colleagues analyzed data from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC), which recruited 142,605 men and 335,873 women in Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom, between 1992 and 2000.

The data was mostly self-reported by the participants and detailed their dietary and lifestyle habits. The participants were followed for a median of 8.7 years, during which time deaths and incidents of cancer diagnoses were noted.

The researchers then analysed the data using Cox regression analysis to find links between diet, lifestyle and cancer risk. Their results showed:

  • 9,604 men and 21,000 women received a cancer diagnosis (out of 142,605 men and 335,873 women initially included in the study).
  • A “crude” (ie unadjusted) cancer incidence rate of 7.9 per 1000 person-years in men and 7.1 per 1000 person-years in women.
  • A modest reduced risk of cancer risk linked to increased intake of total fruit and vegetables (3 per cent), increased vegetable intake (2 per cent, but this was restricted to women only), and increased fruit intake (1 per cent).
  • Heavy drinkers who consumed higher amounts of fruits and vegetables showed stronger reductions, but this was confined to cancers related to smoking and alcohol.

The authors concluded that:

“A very small inverse association between intake of total fruits and vegetables and cancer risk was observed in this study. Given the small magnitude of the observed associations, caution should be applied in their interpretation.”

The researchers also noted that participants who ate more fruits and vegetables also tended to consume less alcohol, either never smoked or only for a short time, and were physically more active, and these lifestyle factors could have equally contributed to lower cancer risk.

In an accompanying editorial, Dr Walter C. Willett, Chair, Department of Nutrition Fredrick John Stare Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition at the the Harvard School of Public Health, noted that the study “strongly confirms” the findings of other prospective studies (these follow people over a period of time, but do not compare a treatment group to a control group like they do in clinical trials), that eating more fruit and vegetables has little or no effect on reducing people’s risk of cancer, although it does appear to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease.

This could be because the study only looked at all fruits and vegetables and all cancers, and Willett suggests that future studies concentrate on the effect of specific types of fruit and vegetables, perhaps on specific cancers, and starting at earlier periods of people’s lives.

Experts commenting on the study might argue that while 2 or 3 per cent reduced risk may not seem very significant to individuals, in public health terms it translates to thousands of people not getting cancer by eating more fruit and vegetables.

Another, perhaps more indirect argument, is that since we already know that obesity increases cancer risk, then the more fruit and vegetables we eat, the less chance we have of becoming obese and getting cancer that way because they would displace higher calorie foods in our diet.

Kandungan Beta Karotennya merupakan anti oksidan yang menjaga kesehatan dan menghambat proses penuaan. Selain itu Beta Karoten dapat mencegah dan menekan pertumbuhan sel kanker serta melindungi asam lemak tidak jenuh ganda dari proses oksidasi.

Jika tubuh memerlukan vitamin A maka beta karoten di hati akan diubah menjadi vitamin A. Fungsi vitamin A dapat mencegah buta senja, mempercepat penyembuhan luka dan mempersingkat lamanya sakit campak. Sebuah wortel ukuran sedang mengandung sekitar 15.000 IU beta karoten. Berdasarkan penelitian diketahui bahwa dengan mengkonsumsi wortel yang dikukus sebentar akan memperbesar penyerapan beta karoten.

Daun wortel mengandung porphyrins. Zat ini dapat merangsang kelenjar pituary dan meningkatkan hormon seks. Buah mengandung bisabolene, tiglic acid dan geraniol. Biji wortel liar mengandung flavonoid, minyak menguap termasuk asarone, carotol, pinene, dan limonene.

Bagian yang digunakan
Bagian yang digunakan adalah akar (umbi wortel), biji dan daun.

Indikasi
Akar wortel digunakan untuk pengobatan :

  • Tekanan darah tingi (Hipertensi),
  • kadar kolesterol yang tinggi (Hiperkolesterolemia),
  • Kanker. seperti kanker pankreas dan kanker paru,
  • Hepatitis,
  • Mencegah stroke dan rabun senja,
  • Badan lemas karena kadar gula darah rendah (Hipoglikemia),
  • Diare kronis pada bayi,
  • Cacing kremi pada anak-anak,
  • Campak, cacar air,
  • Sukar buang air besar (sembelit),
  • Mencegah keracunan bahan kimia berbahaya, seperti logam berat,
  • Menghentikan kebiasaan merokok,
  • Sesak napas (asma).

Daun digunakan untuk mengatasi :

  • Memperindah rambut,
  • Meningkatkan hormon seks,
  • Memperlancar kencing pada radang kandung kemih (sistitis) dan batu ginjal.

Daun dan biji digunakan untuk pengobatan :

  • Beri-beri,
  • Batu saluran kencing,
  • Nyeri perut (kolik),
  • Rasa sakit setelah bangun tidur pagi akibat minuman keras,
  • Perut kembung

Cara pemakaian
Untuk obat yang diminum, jus atau parut wortel segar secukupnya, lalu peras sampai terkumpul 150 cc (3/4 gelas belimbing). Selanjutnya minum segera sampai habis.

Untuk pemakaian luar, oleskan jus wortel ke bagian tubuh yang luka. Jus wortel berkhasiat mempercepat penyembuhan luka bakar, tersiram air panas, dan eksim.

Contoh pemakaian

Pencuci mulut
Iris 1 buah wortel segar berukuran sedang tipis-tipis. Tambahkan 3 cangkir air bersih, lalu didihkan selama 20 menit. Selanjutnya, angkat dan diamkan selama 30 menit, lalu saring. Simpan air saringannya dikulkas. Gunakan ramuan ini untum mencuci mulut dan berkumur tenggorokan setiap pagi. Air rebusan wortel berkhasiat antiseptik.

Kadar kolesterol darah tinggi, kanker
Cuci 5 buah wortel berukuran sedang sampai bersih, lalu jus atau parut. Peras hasil parutannya, lau saring. Minum air saringannya yang terkumpul sekaligus. Lakukan setiap hari.

Badan lemas karena kadar gula darah rendah
Minum 1/2 cangkir jus wortel yang dicampur dengan 1/2 cangkir jus nanas.

Sembelit, terkontaminasi bahan beracun
Cuci 2 buah wortel segar berukuran sedang dan 2 lembar daun kubis segar sampai bersih. Makan sebagai lalapan mentah bersama nasi.

Menghentikan kebiasaan merokok
Makan 2-3 buah wortel segar berukuran sedang setiap hari. Lakukan selama 2 minggu.

Asma
Makan 2-3 buah wortel yang telah dikukus, kemudian minum air hangat. Cara lain, minum jus wortel setiap hari.

Hepatitis
Cuci wortel segar secukupnya sampai bersih dari kotoran, lalu bilas dengan air matang. Potong-potong seperlunya, lalu buat jus. Cara lain, parut wortel, lalu saring sampai air saringannya terkumpul sebanyak 1 cangkir, langsung diminum. Lakukan sehari 2 kali.

Kolik
Seduh 1 sendok teh serbuk biji wortel wortel dengan 3/4 cangkir air panas. Setelah dingin, minum sekaligus. Lakukan 3 kali sehari.

Beri-beri
Rebus 2 sendok makan buang wortel kering dalam 3 gelas air sampai tersisa 1 gelas. Setelah dingin, saring dan air saringannya diminum sekaligus. Lakukan 2 kali sehari, pagi dan siang hari.

Borok
Cuci daun wortel segar secukupnya, lalu giling halus. Tambahkan sedikit madu sambil diaduk merata. Bubuhkan ramuan tadi ke tempat yang sakit, laul balut dengan kain perban. Ganti ramuan 2-3 kali sehari.

Catatan
Apabila seseorang mengkonsumsi jus wortel terlalu banyak dapat menyebabkan warna kulit menjadi kuning. Jika hal ini terjadi, hentikan sementara waktu sampai warna kulit menjadi normal kembali.
Jika seseorang sedang menggunakan obat accutane untuk mengobati jerawat (acne) yang cukup berat, dianjurkan untuk tidak mengkonsumsi beta karoten.

Waru



Waru
(Hibiscus tiliaceus L.)
Tumbuhan tropis berbatang sedang, terutama tumbuh di pantai yang tidak berawa atau didekat pesisir. Waru tumbuh liar di hutan dan di ladang, kadang-kadang ditanam di pekarangan atau di tepi jalan sebagai pohon pelindung. Pada tanah yang subur batangnya lurus, tetapi pada tanah yang tidak subur batangnya tumbuh membengkok, peracabangan dan daun-daunnya lebih lebar.

Uraian Tumbuhan
Pohon, tinggi 5-15 m. Batang berkayu, bulat bercabang, warna cokelat. Daun bertangkai, tunggal berbentuk jantung atau bundar telur, diameter sekitar 19 cm. Pertulangan menjari, warnanya hijau, bagian bawah berambut abu-abu rapat.

Bunga berdiri sendiri atau 2-5 dalam tandan, bertaju 8-11 buah, berwarna kuning dengan noda ungu pada pangkal bagian dalam, berubah menjadi kuning merah dan akhirnya menjadi kemerah-merahan. Buah bulat telur, berambut lebat, beruang lima, panjang sekitar 3 cm, berwarna cokelat. Biji kecil, berwarna cokelat muda.

Daun mudanya biasanya dimakan sebagai sayuran. Kulit kayu berserat, biasanya digunakan untuk membuat tali. Waru dapat diperbanyak dengan biji.

Sifat dan Khasiat
Daun berkhasiat antiradang, antitoksik, peluruh dahak dan peluruh kencing. Akar berkhasiat sebagai penurun panas dan peluruh haid.

Kandungan Kimia
Daun mengandung saponin, flavonoida dan polifenol, sedangkan akarnya mengandung saponin, flavonoida dan tanin

Bagian yang digunakan
Bagian yang digunakan adalah daun, akar dan bunga.

Indikasi
Daun waru digunakan untuk pengobatan :

  • TB Paru-paru, batuk,sesak napas,
  • Radang amandel (tonsilitis),
  • Demam,
  • Berak darah dan lendir pada anak, muntah darah,
  • Radang usus,
  • Bisul,abses,
  • Keracunan singkong,
  • Penyubur rambut, rambut rontok,

Akar digunakan untuk mengatasi :

  • Terlambat haid,
  • Demam,

Bunga digunakan untuk pengobatan :

  • Radang mata

Cara pemakaian
Untuk obat yang diminum, gunakan daun segar sebanyak 50-100g atau 15-30g bunga. Rebus dan air rebusannya diminum..

Untuk pemakaian luar, giling daun waru segar secukupnya sampai halus. Turapkan ramuan ini pada kelainan kulit, seperti bisul atau gosokkan pada kulit kepala untuk mencegah kerontokan rambut dan sebagai penyubur rambut.

Contoh pemakaian

TB Paru
Potong-potong 1 genggam daun waru segar, lalu cuci seperlunya. Tambahkan 3 gelas minum air bersih, lalu rebus sampai airnya tersisa sekitar 3/4-nya. Setelah dingin, saring dan tambahkan air gula ke dalam air saringannya, lalu diminum, sehari 3 kali masing-masing 3/4 gelas minum.
Sediakan daun waru, pegagan (Centella asiatica L.) dan daun legundi (Vitex trifolia L.) masing-maisng 1/2 genggam, 1/2 bidara upas (Merremia mammosa Lour.), 1 jari rimpang kencur (Kaempferia galanga L.) dan 3 jari gula enau. Cuci semua bahan-bahan tersebut, lalu potong-potong seperlunya. Masukkan kedalam periuk tanah atau panci email. Masukkan 3 gelas minum air bersih, lalu rebus sampai airnya tersisa 3/4-nya. Setelah dingin, saring dan air saringannya siap untuk diminum, sehari 3 kali masing-masing 3/4 gelas.

Batuk
Cuci 10 lembar daun waru segar, lalu potong-potong seperlunya. Tambahkan 3 gelas minum air bersih, lalu rebus sampai tersisa 3/4 bagian. Setelah dingin saring dan air saringannya diminum, sehari 3kali, masing-masing 1/3 bagian. Sebelum diminum, tambahkan madu secukupnya.

Batuk berdahak
Cuci 10 lembar daun waru yang masih muda sampai bersih, lalu tambahkan gula batu seukuran telur burung merpati. Tambahkan 3 gelas minum air bersih, lalu rebus sampai airnya tersisa 3/4 bagian.Setelah dingin, saring dan air saringannya diminum, sehari 3 kali minum, masing-masing 1/3 bagian.

Radang amandel
Cuci 1 genggam daun waru segar, lalu rebus dalam 2 gelas air bersih sampai air rebusannya tersisa 1 1/2 gelas. Setelah dingin, saring dan air saringannya digunakan untuk berkumur (gargle) terus diminum sehari 3-4 kali, setiap kali cukup seteguk.

Radang usus
Makan daun waru muda yang masih kuncup sebagai lalap.

Berak darah dan lendir pada anak
Cuci 7 lembar daun waru muda (yang masih kuncup) sampai bersih. Tambahkan 1/2 cangkir air sambil diremas-remas sampai airnya mengental seperti selai. Tambahkan gula aren sebesar kacang tanah sambil diaduk sampai larut. Peras dan saring menggunakan sepotong kain halus. Minum air saringannya sekaligus.

Muntah darah
Cuci 10 lembar daun waru segar sampai bersih,lalu giling halus. Tambahkan 1 cangkir air minum sambil diremas-remas. Selanjutnya saring dan tambahkan air gula secukupnya kedalam air saringannya lalu diminum sekaligus.

Rambut rontok
Cuci 30 lembar daun waru segar dan 20 daun randu segar (Ceiba pentandra Gaertn.), lalu giling sampai halus. Tambahkan 2 sendok makan minyak jarak dan air perasan 1 buah jeruk nipis, sambil diaduk sampai rata. Saring ramuan tersebut menggunakan sepotong kain sambil diperas. Gunakan air perasannya untuk menggosok kulit kepala sambil dipijat ringan. Lakukan sore hari setelah mandi, lalu bungkus rambut dengan handuk atau sepotong kain. Selanjutnya cuci rambut keesokkan harinya. Lakukan 3 kali seminggu.

Penyubur rambut
Cuci 15 lembar daun waru muda, lalu remas-remas dalam 1 gelas air bersih sampai airnya seperti selai. Selanjutnya,peras dan saring menggunakan sepotong kain. Embunkan cairan yang terkumpul selama semalam. Keesokan paginya, gunakan cairan tersebut untuk membasahi rambut dan kulit kepala. Alhasil, kepala menjadi sejuk dan rambut akan tumbuh lebih subur..

Bisul
Cuci 5 lembar daun waru segar, lalu giling sampai halus. Tambahkan air garam secukupnya sampai menjadi adonan seperti bubur. Turapkan adonan pada bisul dan sekelilingnya, lalu balut dengan kain perban. Ganti ramuan 2-3 kali sehari.

Nyeri sewaktu kencing pada anak-anak
Cuci 5 lembar daun waru segar, tambahkan adas dan pulosari secukupnya, lalu giling sampai halus. Gunakan adonan ini sebagai tapal yang diletakkan pada perut bagian bawah.

Demam
Cuci 1/2 jari akar waru dan akar 2 tanaman lapak liman, lalu rebus dalam 3 gelas air bersih sampai tersisa separonya. Setelah dingin, saring dan air saringannya diminum,sehari 3 kali, masing-masing 1/2 gelas.
Rebus 15g daun waru segar dalam 2 gelas air bersih selama 20 menit. Setelah dingin, saring dan air saringannya dibagi menjadi 2 bagian sama banyak. Minum 2 kali sehari, pagi dan sore hari.
Sediakan 15 lembar daun waru segar dan 2 batang tanaman tapak liman (Elephantopus scaber L.) beserta akarnya. Selanjutnya, remas-remas dalam 1 ember air mandi. Gunakan airnya untuk memandikan penderita demam (menggunakan handuk kecil)

Catatan
Hibiscus similis B1. adalah jenis waru yanga hampir sama dengan H. Tiliaceus. Tampaknya,jenis ini lebih banyak ditanam, yang dikenal dengan waru gunung (Sunda), waru gombong, waru kopek (Jawa) dan waru klence (Madura).

Temulawak



Temulawak
(Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb.)
Temulawak merupakan tanaman asli Indonesia dan termasuk salah satu jenis temu-temuan yang paling banyak digunakan sebagai bahan baku obat tradisional. Selain itu, temulawak merupakan sumber bahan pangan , pewarna, bahan baku industri (seperti kosmetika), maupun dibuat makanan atau minuman segar. Temulawak telah dibudidayakan dan banyak ditanam di pekarangan atau tegalan, juga sering ditemukan tumbuh liar di hutan jati atau padang alang-alang. Tanaman ini lebih produktif pada tempat terbuka yang terkena sinar matahari dan dapat tumbuh mulaid ari dataran rendah sampai dataran tinggi. Akan tetapi, untuk mencapai hasil yang maksimal, sebaiknya ditanam pada ketinggian sekitar 200-600 mdpl.

Uraian Tumbuhan
Terna tahunan (perennial) ini tumbuh merumpun dengan batang semua yang tumbuh dari rimpangnya. Batang semu berasal dari pelepah-pelepah daun yang saling menutup membentuk batang. Tinggi tanaman ini dapat mencapai 2 meter. Tiap tanaman berdaun 2-9 helai, berbentuk bulat memanjang atau lanset, panjang 31-84 cm, lebar 10-18 cm, berwarna hijau, berwarna merah keunguan. Perbungaan termasuk tipe exantha, yaitu jenis temu yang bunganya keluar langsung dari rimpangnya yang panjangnya mencapai 40-60 cm.

Bunga mejemuk berbentuk bulir, bulat panjang, panjang 9-23 cm, lebar 4-6 cm. Bunga muncul secara bergiliran dari kantong-kantong daun pelindung yang besar dan beraneka ragam dalam warna dan ukurannya. Mahkota bunga berwarna merah. Bunga mekar pada pagi hari dan berangsur-angsur layu di sore hari. Sejauh ini, temulawak belum eprnah dilaporkan menghasilkan buah atau biji. Rimpang dibedakan atas rimpang induk (empu) dan rimpang cabang. Rimpang induk berbentuk jorong atau gelondong, berwarna kuning tua atau coklat kemerahan, bagian dalam berwarna jingga cokelat. Rimpang cabang keluar dari rimpang induk, ukurannya lebih kecil, tumbuhnya kearah samping, bentuknya bermacam-macam dan warnanya lebih muda.

Akar-akar dibagian ujung membengkak, membentuk umbi yang kecil. Rimpang temulawak termasuk yang paling besar diantara semua rimpang marga Curcuma. Rimpangnya dipanen jika bagian-bagian tanaman yang ada diatas tanah sudah mulai kering dan mati. Biasanya sekitar 9-24 bulan. Sebagian ahli taksonomi menganggap bahwa temulawak merupakan bentuk variasi intraspesifikiasi dari Curcuma zedoaria.

Sebagai ramuan obat tradisional, temulawak dapat digunakan sebagai bahan obat utama (remedium cardinale), bahan obat penunjang (remedium adjuvans), pemberi warna (corrigentia coloris) maupun penambah aroma (corrigentia odoris). Secara empiris, temulawak digunakan sebagai obat dalam bentuk tunggal maupun campuran. Temulawak dapat digunakan untuk mengatasi gangguan hati dan penyakit kuning, baik berupa rebusan meupun seduhan rimpang yang dijadikan bubuk. Pati rimpang temulawak, dapat digunakan untuk makanan bayi atau sebagai pembuat kue. Temulawak dapat diperbanyak dengan rimpang yang telah berumur 9 bulan lebih.

Sifat dan Khasiat
Rimpang berbau aromatik tajam, rasanya pahit agak pedas. Temulawak mempunyai khasiat laktagoga, kolagoga, antiinflamasi, tonikum dan diuretik. Minyak asiri temulawak, juga berkhasiat fungistatik pada berbagai jenis jamur dan bakteriostatik pada mikroba Staphyllococcus sp. dan Salmonella sp.

Aktivitias kolagoga rimpang temulawak ditandai dengan meningkatnya produksi dan sekresi empedu yang bekerja kolekinetik dan koleretik. Kerja kolekinetik dilakukan oleh fraksi kurkuminoid, sedangkan kerja kolerotik dilakukan oleh komponen dari fraksi minyak asiri. Denga meningkatnya pengeluaran cairan empedu maka partikel padat dalam kandung empedu berkurang. Keadaan ini akan mengurangi kolik empedu, perut kembung akibat gangguan metabolisme lemak, dan menurunkan kadar kolesterol darah yang tinggi.

Aktivitas anti tumor dilakukan terhadap mencit dengan sacroma 180 ascites (Itokawa, 1985). Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, akurkumen mempunyai aktivitas antitumor yang tinggi, sifatnya tergantung pada besarnya dosis yang diberikan.

Kandungan Kimia
Temulawak terdiri dari fraksi pati, kurkuminoid dan minyak asiri (3-12 %). Fraksi Pati merupakan kandungan terbesar, jumlah bervariasi antara 48-54% tergantung dari ketinggian tempat tumbuh. Makin tinggi tempat tumbuh maka kadar patinya semakin rendah dan kadar minyaknya semakin tinggi.

Pati temulawak terdiri dari abu, protein, lemak, karbohidrat, serat kasar, kurkuminoid, kalium, natrium, kalsium, magnesium, besi, mangan dan kadnium (Sidik, 1985). pati rimpang temulawak dapat dikembangkan sebagai sumber karbohidrat, yang digunakan untuk bahan makanan atau campuran bahan makanan.

Fraksi kurkuminoid mempunyai aroma khas, tidak toksik, terdiri dari kurkumin yang mempunyai aktivitas antiradang dan desmetoksikurkumin.

Minyak asiri berupa cairan berwarna kuning atau kuning jingga, berbau aromatik tajam. Komposisinya tergantung pada umur rimpang, tempat tumbuh, teknik isolasi, teknik analisis, perbedaan klon varietas dan sebagainya. Oei Ban Liang (1985) denga metode kromatografi gas mendeteksi 31 komponen yang terkandung dalam temulawak. Beberapa diantaranya merupakan komponen minyak khas asiri temulawak, yaitu isofuranogermakren, trisiklin, allo-aromadendren, germaken dan xanthorrhizol. Selain itu, terdapat komponen lain yang bersifat insect repellent yaitu ar-turmeron (Su, 1982)

Bagian yang digunakan
Bagian yang digunakan adalah rimpang. Caranya cuci rimapng temulawk dari kotoran yang melekat sampai bersih, lalu kupas kulitnya dan iris tipis-tips dengan ketebalan 7-8 mm. Selanjutnya, keringkan di bawah sinar matahari langsung selama beberapa hari dengan cara diangin-anginkan pada tempat terlindung, tetapi tidak lembab atau keringkan dalam tanur pemanas pada temperatur 50-55oC selama 7 jam. Jika temperatur terlalu tinggi maka sebagian minyak asiri akan menguap.

Indikasi
Rimpang temulawak digunakan untuk pengobatan dan mengatasi :

  • Radang hati (hepatitis), sakit kuning (jaundice)
  • Radang ginjal
  • Radang kronis kandung empedu (kolestik kronik)
  • Meningkatkan aliran empedu ke saluran cerna
  • Perut kembung
  • Tidak nafsu makan (anoreksia) akibat kekurangan cairan empedu
  • Demam, pegal linu, rematik
  • Memulihkan kesehatan setelah melahirkan
  • Sembelit, diare
  • Kolesterol darah tingi (hiperkolesterolemia)
  • Haid tidak lancar
  • Flek hitam dimuka, jerawat
  • Wasir
  • Produksi ASI sedikit

Cara pemakaian
Untuk obat yang diminum, gunakan 2 jari rimpang segar, lalu rebus. Cara lain, seduh rimpang yang telah dikeringkan dengan air panas. Untuk pemakaian luar, cuci rimpang sampai bersih, lalu parut. Hasil parutannya dapat digunakan sebagai masker untuk mengobati jerawat dan flek hitam dimuka.

Efek farmakologis dan hasil pemakaian
Ekstrak air temulawak dapat menurunkan kadar kolesterol total dan trigliserida darah kelinci dalam keadaan hiperlipidemia, tetapi tidak berpengaruh pada HDL Kolesterol. (Abdul Naser, Jurusan Farmasi FMIPA, UNPAD, 1987)
Kurkuminoid temulawak dapat menurunkan kadar kolesterol total dan trigliserida darah eklinci dalam keadaan hiperlipidemia. Peningkatan kadar HDL Kolesterol hanya berpengaruh pada pemberian 20mg kurkuminoid (Pramadhia Budhijaya, Jurusan Farmasi FMIPA, UNPAD, 1988)
Pemberian kurkuminoid temulawak pada kelinci berbobot 1,5-2,5 kg, dengan dosis 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 mg/ekor, peroral, setiap hari selama 42 hari. Pada smeua dosis, kurkuminoid dapat menurunkan kadar kolesterol total serta menaikkan kadar asam empedu darah kelinci.(Robert Edward Aritonang, Jurusan Farmasi FMIPA, UNPAD, 1988)
Infus rimpang temulawak 5, 10, dan 20% dapat meningkatkan daya regenerasi sel hatis ecara nyata dibanding kontrol pada tikus putih jantan yang dirusak sel hatinya dengan 1,25 ml karbon tetraklorida/kg bb, peroral (Setiawan Angtoni, Fakultas Farmasi, UBAYA, 1991)
Ekstrak air temulawak 10% b/ dengan dosis 6,8 dan 10 ml/hari dapat menurunkan kadar SGOT dan SGPT darah kelinci yang terinfeksi virus hepatitis B, tetapi tdiak berpengaruh terhadap virus hepatitis B. (Sumiyati Yuningsih, Jurusan Farmasi FMIPA, UNPAD, 1987)
Kurkuminoid temulawak dengan dosis 10, 15, dan 20 mg/hari dapat menurunkan kadar SGOT dan SGPT, serta menaikkan kadar ChE darah kelinci keadaan hepatoksik. (Tavip Budiawan, Jurusan Farmasi, FMIPA, UNPAD, 1988)
Minyak asiri temulawak jenuh dalam daftar “KREBS”, akan menghambat penyerapan glukosa dalam usus halus tikus dan bersifat reservibel. (Endah Primawati, Jurusan Farmasi, FMIPA, UNPAD, 1987)
Kurkuminoid temulawak dapat meningkatkan penyerapan glukosa diusus halus tikus. Penyerapan ini juga bersifat reservibel. (Karta, Jurusan Farmasi, FMIPA, UNPAD, 1987)
Campuran kurkuminoid dan minyak asiri menghambat penyerapan glukosa pada mencit. Ikatan keduanya juga bersifat reservibel. (Eli Halimah, Jurusan Farmasi, FMIPA, UNPAD, 1987)
Infus rimpang temulawak 20% dan 40% dapat menambah produksi air susu mencit secara nyata dibandingkan dengan kontrol. Terdapat perbedaan yang nyata antara pemberian infus 20% dan 40%. Infus diberikan pada mencit dan produksi susu diukur dengan cara meniali perbedaan berat anak mencit sebelum dan sesudah menyusui. (Clara Maria Limono, FF, UBAYA, 1990)

Contoh pemakaian

Pelancar ASI
Cuci 20g rimpang segar temulawak, lalu parut. Hasil parutannya peras dan saring, lalu ditim sampai mendidih. Setelah dingin, tambahkan 2 sendok makam madu sambil diaduk rata, lalu diminum. Lakukan pagi dan sore dengan takaran yang sama banyak.

Menurunkan kadar kolesterol darah tinggi
Kupas kulit rimpang temulawak segar sebesar 3 jari, lalu parut. Tambahkan 3/4 cangkir air panas dan biarkan mengendap. Setelah dingin, endapannya dibuang dan airnya diminum. Lakukan setiap hari.

Hepatitis
Rimpang temulawak segar sebesar 2 jari dikupas kulitnya lalu diparut. Tambahkan air panas sebanyak 1/2 cangkir dan 1 sendok madu. Aduk campuran tadi sampai merata lalu dibirakan mengendap. Minum beninggannya, ampasnya dibuang. Lakukan 2 kali sehari, sampai sembuh.
Rebus 10g rimpang temulawak kering dan 30g akar alang-alang (Imperata cylindrica) dalam 3 gelas air sampai tersisa 1 gelas. Setelah dingin, saring dan air saringannya diminum sekaligus. Lakukan 2 kali sehari

Wasir
Sediakan rimapang temulawak sebesar jari, kelembak (Rheum officinalle Baill.) sebesar 3/4 jari, 1 genggam pegagan (Centella asiatica L), 1 genggam daun saga (Abrus precatoris L) dan gula neau sebesar 3 jari. Cuci bahan-bahan tersebut, lalu potong-potong seperlunya. Selanjutnya, rebus bahan-bahan tersebut dalam 5 gelas air bersih sampai tersisa kira-kira separuhnya. Setelah dingin, saring dan air saringannya diminum sehari 3 kali, masing-masing 1/3 bagian. Lakukan pengobatan ini setiap hari.

Jerawat
Cuci rimpang temulawak sebesar 1 jari, lalu potong-potong seperlunya. Selanjutnya rebus dalam 4 gelas minum air bersih sampai tersisa separuhnya. Setelah dingin, saring dan tambahkan madu kedalam air saringannya seperlunya, lalu diminum. Pengobatan dilakukan sehari 2 kali, setiap kali cukup 1 gelas.

Diare
Cuci rimpang temulawak sebesat 1/2 ibu jari, lalu panggang sampai hangus. Selanjutnya giling bahan tersebut sampai halus, lalu seduh dengan 1/2 cangkir air panas. Tambahkan 1 sendok makan madu sambil aduk sampai merata, lalu diminum. Lakukan 2 kali sehari sampai sembuh.

Sembelit
Sediakan rimpang temulawak dan buah asam (Tamarindus indicaL.) masak (masing-masing sebesar 1 jari), gula enau secukupnya. Selanjutnya potong tipis-tipis, lalu seduh dengan 1 cangkir air mendidih. Aduk sampai gulanya larut dan minum setelah dingin.

Nyeri haid
Sediakan 10 iris rimpang temulawak, asam kawak, sebesar telur burung puyuh dan gula enau sebesar 3 jari. Rebus bahan-bahan tersebut dalam 2 gelas air sampai tersisa separuhnya. Setelah dingin, minum ramuan tersebut. Lakukan setiap hari selama 1 minggu sebelum haid.

Demam
Rebus 1 jari rimpang temulawak yang telah diiris tipis-tipis dan 5 batang meniran dengan akarnya dalam 5 gelas air bersih sampai tersisa separuhnya. Setelah dingin, saring dan air saringannya dibagi untuk 3 kali minum, pagi, siang dan sore hari.

Penambah nafsu makan
Sediakan 20g rimpang temulawak segar yang telah diiris tipis-tipis, 10g asam jawa dan 30g gula enau. Masukkan bahan-bahan tersebut kedalam panci email, lalu rebus dalam 250 cc air sampai mendidih selama 15 menit. Selanjutnya, saring dan minum ramuan tersebut selagi hangat, sehari 2 kali, masing-masing 1/2 bagian.

Catatan
Saat ini sudah diproduksi ramuan temulawak berbentuk tablet, drag (tablet salut gula) atau berbentuk serbuk, contohnya curcuma tablet/drag dan sari temulawak. Cara pemakaian, sehari 3 kali 2 tablet/drag atau 1 bungkus sari temulawak untuk 1 kali pemakaian, sehari 2 bungkus
Jika menggunakan perasan air temulawak mentah (tidak direbus atau diseduh dengan air panas), endapkan dahulu supaya tepungnya tidak ikut terminum karena tepung mentah dapat mengganggu fungsi ginjal
Tepung temulawak dapat dimakan setelah diolah. Caranya parut rimpang, kemudian peras dan endapkan. Buang airnya ganti beberapa kali sampai bau dan warna kuning hilang, kemudian jemur. Akhirnya, tepung temulawak siap digunakan.
